The Image of the Body of Christ as the Church

This meditation is based on a passage for March 18, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: 1 Corinthians 12:12-26

Reflection and Question: We can tell from Paul’s writing that the Corinthian church was plagued by a variety of disruptive divisions. In this memorable image of the human body as a symbol for the congregation, Paul captures how dependent everyone in the church is upon each other as well as how each member has something precious to contribute. In particular Paul points out that in the body the parts “that seem to be weaker are indispensable.” Similarly, in the church, those who have been looked down upon, like GLBT faithful, are to receive greater honor. When has the church been one body in one Spirit for you?

Prayer: Eternal God, by your Spirit You have baptized believers into communities where we both suffer and rejoice together. Stop us from ever saying to another, “I have no need of you.” Inspire us to have the same loving care for one another. Amen.
